Global chip manufacturers issue warnings, global chip shortages will continue for many years

According to industry media reports, some well-known chip designers and manufacturers in the world have warned a few days ago that although industry manufacturers have invested billions of dollars in building fabs to speed up construction, the global chip shortage may continue until 2022 or 2023. .

According to the estimates of TSMC, Intel and Nvidia, this crisis will last for several years, because it will take some time for the new wafer fab to open and operate.

The shortage of chips will continue for some time

Representatives of TSMC, the world's largest OEM chip manufacturer, said in a conference call with research institutions that the severity of the chip shortage should be alleviated from the next quarter, but the overall shortage will continue for a year or even a long time.

TSMC plans to invest about 30 billion U.S. dollars this year to expand production scale, thereby reducing gross profit margins. The company's gross profit margin has fallen from the expected 51.5% to 49.5%.

In order to meet the needs of users, the company's production line utilization rate has reached 100%, and this year's market revenue is expected to increase by 20% over last year.

TSMC’s main customer, NVIDIA, said: “The overall market demand is still very strong, chip products are in short supply, and our channel inventory is still scarce. We expect chip products to remain in short supply for most of this year.”

Nvidia's Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress said that the company hopes to have enough supply to support continued growth beyond the first quarter of 2022, but it is currently unable to meet this demand.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in an interview with the "Washington Post" reporter that it will take some time for chip production to meet supply, because it takes several years to add new capacity. When talking about the shortage of chips, he said: "I think it will take a few years before it can be completely resolved."
