Zhao Zhiguo, spokesperson of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and director of the Information and Communications Administration Bureau, pointed out that as of August, my country has built a total of 1.037 million 5G base stations.

5G is currently one of the topics of high concern from all walks of life. At the press conference held today by the Information Office of the State Council on “Promoting the Building of a Strong Manufacturing Country and Building a Network Power to Build a Well-off Society in an All-round Way”, Zhao Zhiguo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Director of the Information and Communications Administration Bureau, pointed out that as of August, my country’s cumulative 5G base stations have reached 1.037 million, covering all prefecture-level cities in the country, as well as more than 95% of counties and urban areas and 35% of towns and townships, creating tens of thousands of 5G application innovation cases, especially in media, medical care, transportation, education, etc. The industry has formed a number of typical applications such as 5G+4K/8K high-definition video, 5G+ smart medical care, 5G+ car networking, and 5G+ distance education.


Zhao Zhiguo stated that 5G has played a significant role in the application field, especially in the "5G + Industrial Internet" has become one of the most active areas of application innovation. It now covers 22 key industries such as electronic equipment manufacturing, equipment manufacturing, steel, and mining. A batch of typical and representative scene applications such as remote equipment control and machine vision quality inspection. In addition, the 5G industry is accelerating, and Chinese companies have declared that they have a global lead in terms of the number of 5G standard essential patents, domestic brand 5G system equipment shipments, and chip design capabilities. The penetration of 5G mobile phone products has accelerated. From January to August this year, domestic 5G mobile phone shipments reached 168 million units, a year-on-year increase of 80%. Especially in August, the proportion of 5G mobile phones has increased to 74%.

 

Zhao Zhiguo revealed that in the next step, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will focus on the following three aspects to focus on its work.

One is to consolidate the network foundation. Adhere to moderate advancement, comprehensively promote the construction of 5G networks, and accelerate the expansion of coverage to towns and villages. Deepen 5G co-construction and sharing, and promote inter-network roaming. Through 5G coverage in key areas such as transportation hubs and commercial centers, especially in densely populated universities, hospitals and other special places to increase key coverage, we will ultimately improve everyone's 5G service experience. Through 5G virtual private network, hybrid virtual private network and other methods, promote 5G construction and application in key industries in terms of network construction.

 

The second is to expand application scenarios. Although my country has achieved some typical application scenarios, it still needs to face several key points, focusing on three major areas of new information consumption, real economy, and people’s livelihood services, focusing on multiple key industries such as industry, transportation, medical care, agriculture, and cultural tourism. Cultivate a batch of typical demonstrations of 5G convergence applications. Through the "Blooming Cup" 5G application solicitation contest, we will stimulate application innovation vitality, and select some good application scenarios, application cases, and application practices. Through on-site work meetings, selection of typical application scenarios and other innovative work methods, such as typical practices in mining and manufacturing industries, summarize the development results and accelerate the replication and promotion of mature models.

The third is to optimize the ecological environment. Promote the development and industrialization of 5G chips, modules, and terminals for industry applications. Strengthen the overall coordination between departments, deepen the connection between supply and demand, and form a joint force to jointly promote the innovation and development of 5G. At the same time, encourage local governments to increase support for 5G in terms of venues, electricity, and talents, further enhance the initiative of enterprises, and promote basic telecommunications industries, industrial enterprises, equipment manufacturing enterprises, Internet enterprises, scientific research institutes, universities, and societies. All parties involved in the study, research and application have participated extensively, and finally formed a good industrial ecology of collaborative innovation, mutual benefit and win-win results.
