Starlink's Internet Speed May Soon Exceed The Average U.S. Broadband Speed

The popular Internet performance test application developer Ookla recently conducted a speed test on Starlink and published a report comparing its performance with other global satellite Internet providers such as Viasat and HughesNet, as well as with fixed-line broadband. For comparison. The study found that Starlink is rapidly approaching a download speed of 100Mbps in the United States, which is only about 13% behind fixed-line broadband. However, the delay of the former is still more than three times higher, at 45ms.

Ookla also provided further data analysis and noticed the improvement between the first quarter and the second quarter. It can be seen that Starlink's bandwidth has been greatly improved during the period from March to May this year. Prior to this, the download speed hovered around 70Mbps, but it currently reaches 97.23Mbps. On the other hand, the improvement in US fixed-line broadband over the same period is almost negligible.

Although things will definitely change in the future, if huge improvements like the first quarter and the second quarter become the norm, interstellar links may soon surpass fixed-line broadband speeds. In fact, the neighboring country of the United States, Canada, is already experiencing this situation.

Currently, the download speed of Starlink is higher than that of broadband. However, the upload bandwidth has not yet reached, and the delay is still very high, close to 3-5 times.

Starlink in continental Europe performed better, especially in countries such as Germany, where Starlink’s download volume is almost twice that of broadband, the upload speed is much higher, and the latency is much smaller than in most other places.
