The Brazilian government announces plans to achieve national 5G coverage by 2029

On the 17th local time, the Brazilian government's Ministry of Communications and the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) announced in a public hearing held in the House of Representatives that they plan to achieve full 5G coverage in the country in 2029. According to this plan, by 2029, there will be more than 3 communication companies providing 5G services in 1,174 Brazilian cities with more than 30,000 residents. And 4396 cities with fewer than 30,000 residents will have at least one communications company providing 5G services.

The Brazilian Deputy Minister of Communications, Robert, emphasized that the 5G frequency band auction held recently will guarantee the expansion of 4G to rural areas and roads that do not currently have the technology. On the 5th of this month, the National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil announced the completion of the fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G) frequency band auction. There are 4 frequency bands in this bidding, and the operating rights are valid for 20 years. The auctions are carried out in different regions, attracting 15 telecom operators to participate in the bidding. Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency said that this round of 5G band auctions is expected to generate 47.2 billion reais (approximately 54.4 billion yuan) in economic gains. Among them, 7.4 billion reais (approximately 8.5 billion yuan) will be used as government royalties, part of which will be included in the national treasury, and part of it will be used for investment in the communications industry. The remaining income will be used for supporting investment within the contract period of the winning company, such as making up for shortcomings in infrastructure, promoting the modernization of network technology and expanding the scope of telecommunications services.
