Canada: 5G will not spread the new crown but may affect aircraft safety

2021.10.13

Canadian media reported that due to concerns that 5G communications may interfere with radios used in some airport navigation equipment, the Canadian federal government has imposed the latest restrictions on 5G services near most airports.

Around March of this year, rumors of 5G spreading the new crown virus suddenly prevailed in the UK and incited a series of offline violent incidents. Since the end of March, there have been hundreds of vicious incidents of arson and damage to telecommunications equipment such as cell phone towers in the United Kingdom and across Europe, and insults and attacks on communications engineers. Since April 1, employees of open reach, a network equipment company under the British Telecom Group, have reported dozens of abusive incidents, including some engineers who were not involved in the installation of 5G facilities. The reason is that people believe that 5g facilities will aggravate the spread of the new crown virus to some extent.

Although this rumor is no longer so popular, Canadian officials have recently made a dumbfounding decision: restrict 5G services near the airport on the grounds that they are worried about flight safety. Canadian media reported that due to concerns that 5G communications may interfere with radios used in some airport navigation equipment, the Canadian federal government has imposed the latest restrictions on 5G services near most airports.

The restrictions imposed by the regulatory authorities are mainly that the frequency bands of these devices are similar. The frequency bands used by navigation equipment are mostly between 4200MHz and 4400MHz. The 5G frequency band recently auctioned by Canada is at 3500MHz. The two are relatively close and there is a possibility of interference.

This has caused dissatisfaction with operators, believing that the regulatory authorities' restrictions are stricter than the measures taken by other countries. Telus stated that they just spent US$2 billion on the 3500MHz band, and the current policy has reduced their value by US$100 million.
