Apple CEO Cook: 5G promotion is still in the "early stage"

2021.07.28

Apple CEO Tim Cook believes that 5G promotion is still in the "early stage." Thanks to the increased demand for this technology, iPhone sales will continue to grow. Consumers can now buy iPhone 12 all over the world, but many markets do not have any form of 5G. Apple predicts that due to the current low 5G penetration rate, demand for 5G-enabled iPhones will remain strong in the future.

The fastest 5G technology currently is the so-called millimeter wave (mmWave), which is only available on iPhones in some US cities. Even if other countries have this frequency band, Apple will not enable the technology outside the United States.

iPhone sales in China are also attributable to the surge in 5G demand, but Apple still only accounts for a small part of this huge market. Cook said on Apple's 2021 third-quarter earnings conference call: "We are in the early stages of 5G, and only a few countries have achieved double-digit growth rates."

Although analysts are skeptical of the iPhone's continued growth, Cook said, "We are very optimistic about the iPhone's future."

The third-quarter financial report shows that Apple once again broke the revenue record. iPhone sales in the quarter reached 39.6 billion U.S. dollars, an increase of 52% from the 25.98 billion U.S. dollars in the same period in 2020.

Apple is expected to expand its 5G product lineup, including the introduction of 5G-enabled iPhone SE and "iPhone 13." As Apple continues to promote growth, the company may also extend its millimeter wave support to other countries.
