React technology outlook in 2024: exploring future innovation and development
As 2024 approaches, React.js has solidified its position in modern web development, becoming one of the most popular tools. React not only has a huge user base, but also has spawned a diverse ecosystem, with many React-based libraries and frameworks springing up like mushrooms after a rain. In this ecosystem, innovation and practicality coexist, providing developers with a broad space for choice.
The vast React ecosystem provides developers with a wealth of resources to solve common problems. However, this abundance can also feel overwhelming at times. In order to pick the most suitable tool, we usually need to consider many factors. Project needs, security, performance, development experience, and infrastructure costs are all important factors to weigh.
Why is React so popular?
- Huge User Base: React’s user base spans a broad spectrum from beginners to experienced developers, which means there’s plenty of community support and resources to learn from and refer to.
- Rich ecosystem: React's ecosystem includes various libraries and frameworks. These tools can help developers solve various development problems efficiently, thereby accelerating the progress of the project.
- Flexibility and scalability: React's design philosophy provides a high degree of flexibility and scalability, allowing developers to choose the most suitable technology stack and tools based on the specific needs of the project.
create-react-app: The first step in the React journey
In the world of React, starting a new project is always accompanied by excitement and anticipation. However, in the early days of React, the initialization process of the project can be a headache. This process involves manually configuring packaging tools, transpilers, task runners, and various other components, and sometimes the complexity of the setup process exceeds the complexity of the application we intend to build. Fortunately, the React team recognized this challenge and developed a comprehensive tool called create-react-app that greatly simplifies this setup process.
Over time, the React ecosystem continues to evolve, with new tools emerging that further enhance the developer experience. Now, let’s explore some of these tools and see how they impact modern React project initialization.
Vite and React single-page applications: the new direction of development
In the modern web development toolbox, Vite, with its efficient features and extensive framework support,
It has become the new favorite of many developers. Especially in React projects, Vite, as a modern packaging tool, has won widespread praise for its lightning-fast development server, hot module replacement (HMR), native support for TypeScript, JSX, CSS and other features. Its full customizability allows developers to flexibly adjust according to project needs. This flexibility and efficiency make Vite an ideal choice for React single-page application (SPA) development.
Features of React Single Page Application (SPA)
A single-page application is a web application that only loads a single HTML page and dynamically updates the page through user interaction with the application. SPA leverages JavaScript to create a smooth, fast, and desktop-like experience without the need for page reloads. Although this method is traditional, it has been widely used for many years because of its unique advantages and disadvantages.
Pros and Cons of SPA
advantage:
- Flexibility: Freedom of choice of tools for everything from routing to state management to data retrieval.
- Fast user experience: SPA is known for its fast and responsive user interface that provides instant feedback to users.
- Simple infrastructure: easy to build, deploy, and scale because we only need to serve static files.
- Offline support: Although it is not simple to implement offline support, it is relatively easy for SPA to store information on the user's device and allow the application to be used when there is no network connection.
shortcoming:
- Poor SEO: Since SPA cannot run on the server, dynamic meta tags cannot be generated, which is very detrimental to search engine visibility.
- Prone to UI/UX problems: such as content layout offset, excessive loading indicators, and data flickering caused by client-side data loading.
- Network Waterfall: Fetching multiple resources at the same time may cause rendering delays because each request may need to wait for the completion of the previous request, which may affect the overall user experience.
- Setup Complexity: Setting everything up correctly for a React SPA can be a challenge if you're unsure about the best choice.
Tips for setting up React SPA
- Use Vite: For the reasons mentioned earlier, Vite is ideal for your packaging tool.
- Routing selection: React Router is a proven solution, and TanStack Router, as an emerging choice, provides powerful support for TypeScript and URL query parameter management, and is worth trying.
- State Management: The Context API and core hooks such as useState and useReducer are very effective in managing client state. For more complex use cases, Zustand is a safe choice.
- Asynchronous state management: TanStack Query (formerly React Query) is an excellent choice for asynchronous state management (such as data retrieval), which greatly simplifies the way we obtain and modify server data.
Next.js: Reshaping the future of full-stack React development
Next.js, a full-stack web framework based on React, was one of the first frameworks to introduce server-side rendering (SSR) in the React ecosystem, and is undoubtedly the most popular. Since created and maintained by Vercel and experienced members of the React core team, Next.js has become the first choice for building React applications, establishing itself as the industry standard framework. Over the past decade, and especially in recent years, Next.js has introduced a number of innovative features for React developers through its implementation of React Server Components (RSC).
Advantages of Next.js
- Server-side runtime: Next.js runs on the server, which is very beneficial for fetching data and sending full HTML responses to the browser, avoiding some of the common disadvantages of SPA we mentioned before, such as network waterfalls, content layout offsets, Poor SEO etc.
- 静态站点生成(SSG):当我们的数据变化不频繁时,SSG是一种非常常见的技术。Next.js在这方面做得非常好,能够预渲染React页面,并将它们作为纯文件提供,这在某些情况下能显著提高性能。
- Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR): SSG is great, but every time the data changes, we need to rebuild and deploy the project. ISR comes into play here, we can define the validity period of statically generated pages. After it expires, Next.js will regenerate it with the current data state behind the scenes. We also have the option to manually invalidate the ISR cache if needed.
- React Server Components (RSC): This is a major change. There's been a huge paradigm shift in the React world, and it's a topic everyone is talking about lately. In short, having React run on the server without client-side JavaScript becomes the new default. This is quite a change for a tool that was originally designed to reduce the need for front-end development on the server.
Next.js Challenges
- Infrastructure complexity: Since Next.js primarily runs on the server, this increases the complexity of the server infrastructure compared to SPA. We need to handle the tasks of managing, scaling, and monitoring these servers.
- Excessive abstraction and complexity: With the introduction of the new application catalog and RSC, many things have become abstract for developers, such as caching, complex routing, build processes, etc.
- Outside of Vercel it's not that simple - the easiest way to run Next.js is with Vercel. Since developing the framework, they have built an amazing cloud infrastructure to run it. By leveraging this, a lot of the infrastructure complexities mentioned earlier are eliminated because they manage it all on our behalf. We won't get into the technical details of Vercel Cloud, but it's important to know that it's based on serverless capabilities. The environment of serverless functions is very different from the standard long-running process environment that we are traditionally used to.
Next.js is a remarkable framework that has had a significant impact on the history and development of React. It works for most project types and is currently transitioning to a new architecture called Application Router with RSC. While this architecture may not be quite ready yet, it holds huge potential. Therefore, it is important to have confidence in its development and keep a close eye on its progress, as its future prospects look very promising.
Remix: an emerging framework that reinvents full-stack web development
Remix, similar to Next.js, is a full-stack web framework. Its main focus is on web standards and providing a fast, smooth and flexible user experience. Developed by the team behind React Router and recently acquired by Shopify, Remix introduces exciting new features based on existing web standards and APIs, enhanced by React's interactive capabilities. Its innovations have inspired various features in other frameworks such as Next, SvelteKit, SolidStart, etc. Let's explore some of these features.
Advantages of Remix
- Server-side runtime: Similar to Next.js, Remix runs on the server, which is very beneficial for getting data on the server and sending a full HTML response to the browser, avoiding some of the common disadvantages of SPA we mentioned before.
- Progressive enhancement: Since Remix relies heavily on web standards, most features will work even without client-side JavaScript. This is because Remix is smart enough to fall back to the native browser API when JavaScript is not loaded. For example, the Link component is a basic HTML anchor tag before the JavaScript loads. Once loaded, it becomes more interactive, handling links in a SPA-like manner, creating instant feedback without completely reloading the page.
- Feature-rich: Out-of-the-box features include file-based routing, nested layouts, SSR, data fetching, streaming, asynchronous state management, and more, meaning we don’t need to set them up ourselves; they’re ready to go.
- Excellent documentation: Remix has excellent documentation, providing many practical examples showing how to solve real problems that we as web developers face every day. There’s also a series of startup projects they call a “stack.” At the time of writing, there are three official stacks that are well maintained and documented. They allow us to start a project immediately without having to set up all the common stuff like prettier, eslint, styles, tests, database, infrastructure, CI/CD, etc. All this and more is included.
- Infrastructure flexibility: Remix can be easily deployed to any JavaScript runtime and infrastructure provider, which is well documented.
- Support for Vite: Remember the Vite mentioned earlier? It is mainly used in SPA. Not long ago, Remix started supporting Vite! Now we can take advantage of all the features of Vite and its rich ecosystem.
Remix Challenge
- Infrastructure Complexity: Like Next.js, Remix running on the server increases the complexity of the server infrastructure compared to SPA.
- Route/data coupling: Connecting routes with data can be a bit tricky, as each route has to handle data loading for all of its components. This becomes challenging when the component tree is larger, especially when some deeply nested components want to fetch their own data or when we want to reuse components that handle their own data fetching.
- No support for RSC: One possible solution to the routing/data coupling is to use RSC (React Server Components). Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Remix does not support RSC, but it is already on their roadmap, which is a good sign for the future.
- No middleware support: At the time of writing, there is no officially supported middleware, which could be very handy when dealing with things like authentication or logging.
- Not as popular as Next.js: the community is smaller; not many resources aside from official documentation and content created by the Remix team.
Overall, Remix is well-suited for projects of all sizes, domains, and complexity, offering out-of-the-box functionality, robust documentation, deployment flexibility, and most importantly, a focus on empowering developers. Create a great user experience.
TypeScript: an essential tool for modern React development
In modern React development, TypeScript has become an integral part of the ecosystem. As a statically typed superset of JavaScript, TypeScript brings type checking and advanced tools into our development process. This static typing feature eliminates many potential errors that may arise from dynamic typing, reducing the need to write tests to catch such errors. It enhances the developer experience by catching errors during development, improving code readability, and making refactorings more predictable.
The introduction of TypeScript not only improves code quality, but also helps team collaboration. When the project scale expands, having a clearly defined type system can help new team members understand the structure and logic of the code base faster, reducing the difficulty of understanding the code base. In addition, TypeScript's strong type system provides automated code completion and interface documentation, making decisions during the development process more efficient and accurate.
Zod library: TypeScriptization of data structures
Working hand in hand with TypeScript is the Zod library, which is a very useful tool for developers who want a direct way to describe data structures, convert them into TypeScript types, and ensure type safety at runtime. By connecting the planning stage to actual execution, Zod helps us clarify how the data should be represented and ensure that the data stays that way when the code is run. This approach increases confidence in the reliability of the data structure, making the code more robust and easier to maintain.
Zod's strength lies in its simplicity and power. Developers can use minimalist code to define complex data models, and these definitions are directly converted into TypeScript types and seamlessly integrated into the TypeScript type system. This not only reduces the workload of manual writing and synchronization type definitions, but also automates the data verification and conversion process, greatly improving development efficiency and code robustness.
Combining TypeScript with Zod
Using TypeScript and Zod together, developers can build a powerful and flexible development environment that not only supports strict type checking, but also ensures data consistency and security at runtime. This is especially important for building large, complex applications, which often need to process data of various shapes and sources.
In practice, using TypeScript and Zod allows developers to feel more confident when writing code. They provide a mechanism to ensure that the data structures defined by developers are accurate and consistent at compile time and runtime, thereby reducing runtime errors and improving application stability and user experience.
All in all, the combination of TypeScript and Zod provides a powerful toolset for modern React development, allowing developers to build applications with higher efficiency and lower error rates. By catching more bugs in the early stages of development, they help teams iterate faster and deliver high-quality products, ensuring a smooth development process and product reliability.
TanStack: A modern toolset that simplifies web development
TanStack series of tools include but are not limited to:
TanStack/Query (formerly React Query)
- Purpose : Simplify data acquisition and state management, making applications run faster and smoother.
- Features : Reduce unnecessary data re-acquisition and improve application performance by effectively managing server status and caching strategies.
TanStack/Router
- Purpose : A long-term development routing library that can be used as a drop-in replacement for React Router. React Router has always been regarded as the standard for client-side rendering applications.
- Features : Supports TypeScript, providing comprehensive type support from Link components to using URL query parameters to manage status. TanStack Router is a library with a lot of potential and may even compete with Next.js and Remix in the future.
TanStack/Virtual
- Purpose : A headless library for virtualizing large lists. It does not render any markup and therefore works with any style system and UI component library.
- Features : Solve large data list rendering performance issues and improve performance and responsiveness by only rendering items within the viewport.
TanStack/Table
- Purpose : Another headless library for managing tables and complex data grids.
- Features : Provides many practical functions, such as column sorting, fixing, filtering, paging, etc.
TanStack's toolset is very diverse and solves many common problems we face every day in web development. Due to their headless nature, these tools can be easily adapted to most setups, allowing developers the flexibility to customize based on specific needs.
Advantages of TanStack

UI component library: accelerators and challenges for React project development
Introducing a UI component library into your React project can be a game changer and simplify how user interfaces are built. These libraries provide a large number of ready-made components and styles, which act as a shortcut to not only save time but also ensure that the application looks great.
However, this convenience can turn into a challenge when we realize that most UIs require custom styling and behavior. Tweaking and modifying any component library to make it fit our custom design and product needs is never a fun task for anyone.
Another option is to build the components yourself. This is also a very complex task because there are many things to consider: responsive design, state management, performance, accessibility, a good API, and more. So, how can we improve this process?
Here’s a solution that offers the best of both worlds:
Headless components
- These components provide the building blocks we need without predefined styles, giving us a blank canvas to achieve any desired look and feel. By using headless components, we get all the benefits of accessibility, state management, fast development cycles, etc. Libraries worth watching in this category include projects like Radix, Headless UI, and React Aria.
Tailwind
- This CSS tool has caused a lot of debate in the web development community over the past few years. But in my experience, it's really the only tool that makes CSS easy. All the CSS knowledge we have still applies to utility classes, and we no longer need to worry about naming classes or managing many different CSS files. If your classes become too long or repetitive, just create a React component out of them! Plus, it matches perfectly with the headless components mentioned earlier!
Shadcn UI
- A beautiful and accessible collection of components powered by Radix and Tailwind. But be aware that it's not a library, so we don't install it in the project; we just copy and paste the parts we need. This makes it the perfect starting point as we have full control over it and customize it to our needs. It's completely free and open source.
Catalyst UI
- Similar to Shadcn, made by the creators of Tailwind. Provide a similar experience. But unlike Shadcn, it is a paid service.
Through the combined use of these tools and libraries, React developers can enjoy the advantages of rapid development and high-quality UI construction while maintaining the flexibility of custom designs. Whether you are pursuing a beautiful-looking, highly customizable user interface, or dealing with complex interactions and state management, these toolsets provide powerful support, making the development process more efficient and the results more reliable.
