Google has announced its formal membership in the O-RAN alliance, hoping to boost telecommunications technology
On Monday, Google announced its formal membership of the O-RAN alliance, foreign media reported. Google said joining the O-RAN alliance would allow it to "work together to drive and accelerate" the GROWTH industry.
The O-RAN alliance was launched in February 2018 by five operators, China Mobile, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, NTT DOCOMO and Orange, and was formed by the merger of the original C-RAN alliance and the xRAN Forum. The vision is to make mobile communication networks software, virtualized, flexible, intelligent and more energy efficient by improving the openness and intelligence of wireless access networks (RAN).
"We believe that an industry-wide open reference architecture and interface for RAN is key to driving innovation in mobile networks by communications service providers (CSPs) - the O-RAN alliance has driven significant growth at the RAN level and has been supported by many large CSPs that have become early adopters of the standard," Google said in a blog post. The O-RAN specification will also create the conditions for enhanced network security and enable a more competitive and dynamic ECOSYSTEM of RAN vendors through faster innovation to improve the user experience and unlock new CSP operating models. ”
Specifically, Google is committed to the research and exploration of software, 5G, hybrid and multi-cloud environments, and web-based AI technologies in O-RAN.
