Google Fiber: 5 Gbps and 8 Gbps services available early next year

Google Fiber will roll out symmetrical 5Gbps and 8Gbps services from early 2023.

Google Fiber will roll out symmetrical 5Gbps and 8Gbps services from early 2023, the company said.

Consumers who sign up now will be able to try out the new service starting next month. A Google Fiber blog post pointed to Utah, Kansas City (the original Google Fiber city), and Des Moines as early test sites.

Full commercial availability will begin early next year, Google said, although it did not detail specific markets. Both speed options will come with a Wi-Fi 6 router (though users are free to use their own), two mesh extenders and professional installation. The service is priced at $125 per month (5 Gbps service) and $150 (8 Gbps service).

Google Fiber said it was "committed" to offering the service without contracts, data caps or installation fees. However, the wording sounds more like an intention than a promise.

The post says that 2Gbps service may be enough for gamers and power streamers. Faster services are aimed at creative professionals, those who work in the cloud, have large data sets, or require minimal latency, such as financial professionals executing transactions.

The company is also working towards a 20Gbps service.

While we can't predict the future, we believe the video quality is unprecedented, it feels like a real virtual experience to the touch, and the game is played as fast as you can, (who knows what else?). Amalia O'Sullivan, director of product management for Google Fiber, said in a blog post: "This vision begins with our commitment to delivering an exceptional internet. With the help of content partners and device manufacturers, we're excited to bring Google Fiber customers Come to the next generation internet experience.”.

Last month, Google Fiber CEO Dinni Jain wrote a blog post in which he noted that the future will be faster symmetrical multigigabit speeds and superior customer service.

Google Fiber is apparently also in expansion mode after a period of lull.
